Gallstones and gallbladder disease usually go together. We will tell you more about gallstones and gallbladder problems. What are gallstones and how are they formed? Many people have gallstones, but they do not know they have these, until the pain finally starts. Sometimes gallstones can lead to severe pain and other complications. To prevent gallstones and gallbladder disease, you have to learn about the causes and the symptoms.

Gallstones

Gallstones formation is a process that is usually related to cholesterol levels in one’s blood. That is why obese people have more chances to develop gallstones – their cholesterol levels are usually high. This process is slow and in the beginning, there are no any symptoms. Gallstones can be very small (several millimeters) or they can be quite large (several centimeters).

Several things can lead to gallstones formation. Liver can secrete more cholesterol than actually needed; gallbladder can become unable to empty, so bile remains in there; or cholesterol cannot be properly absorbed. The pain can be very severe and it usually occurs when gallstones get stuck in the bile duct.

Gallbladder disease usually includes gallstones formation; however, sometimes gallbladder disease occurs with no stones.

Here are some factors that can cause gallstones. Women are especially prone to gallstones because of higher estrogen levels in pregnancy; in addition, some hormone therapies and contraceptive pills can also increase cholesterol levels, which can finally lead to gallstones formation.

Genetics can also be one of the factors causing gallstones.

Obesity is among major reasons for gallstones formation. Obese people usually have high cholesterol levels and this leads to gallstones.

Bad diet with too much fat can lead to gallstones.

Age is also one of the factors. People who are over 60 have greater chances for gallstones formation.

Gallstones can be removed without major difficulties. Of course, that depends on many things, like the size and type. Gallbladder disease can also be successfully treated. It is important to know the symptoms of gallbladder disease in time, so you can visit your doctor and get your treatment. Sometimes it is enough to make some changes in your diet to solve the problem. However, in some cases, gallbladder removal is the only solution to the problem. This is a routine operation and it leaves no serious consequences. Nevertheless, a patient must change his/her eating habits. Gallbladder diet is not too restrictive and it includes different types of foods, so you won’t miss anything.
